The 2-minute desk test: does your current chair fit you?
Before you shop, spend two minutes on the chair you own. Sit fully back in the seat, then check these five numbers.
- Feet: both flat on the floor, or on a footrest. If they dangle, the seat is too high for you.
- Knees: roughly 90 to 100 degrees, with thighs about level with the floor.
- Seat depth: you should fit two to three finger-widths between the front edge of the seat and the back of your knee. No gap means the seat is too deep. A hand-wide gap means it is too shallow.
- Elbows: about 90 to 100 degrees, with the armrests just touching your forearms and your shoulders relaxed, not shrugged.
- Lower back: the lumbar curve of the backrest should meet the inward curve of your lower back, around belt height. If there is a gap you could slide a fist into, the chair is not supporting you there.
If you fail two or more, the chair is the problem, not your posture. Most people fail on seat depth and lumbar, which fixed-shape chairs cannot correct.

Three myths about executive chairs
Myth 1: a taller back means better support. Height helps with shoulders and head. Lower back support comes from the shape and position of the lumbar curve. A very tall, flat back with no lumbar contour looks impressive and supports very little.
Myth 2: leather is always hotter than mesh. Leather and vegan leather hold more heat than mesh. In an air-conditioned cabin that difference is small. In a non-air-conditioned office in Mumbai or Hyderabad in May, mesh will feel better after four hours. Match the material to the room you sit in, not to the title on your door.
Myth 3: the most expensive chair is the right one. Price is what you pay today; cost is what you pay in the long run if cheap seating damages your back. That works in both directions. How to test an executive chair in a showroom
Sit for at least ten minutes. Two minutes tells you about the cushion; ten tells you about the chair. Use this checklist.
- Set seat height first, until your feet are flat and your knees are at about 90 to 100 degrees.
- Slide your hips fully to the back of the seat and check the finger gap behind your knee.
- Adjust the lumbar or backrest height until it meets your lower back. Check that it still meets it when you recline.
- Lean back and lock at two positions. The lock should hold with no creep or click-back.
- Move the armrests to your elbow height. If they only go up and down, ask whether the model offers more.
- Turn, roll and stand up quickly. Castors should move smoothly and the base should feel planted.
- Sit in your usual work posture, not a showroom posture. Type on your phone, hold a call, cross your legs if you do.
